Pique-Nique

If you're wandering around London and craving something truly French, Pique-Nique is your answer. Nestled on Tanner Street in SE1, just a short walk from the buzz of Bermondsey, this little gem feels like stepping into a cozy Parisian bistro - but without the flight.

Housed inside a charming red-brick pavilion, Pique-Nique delivers a refreshingly authentic take on French country cuisine. The vibe? Rustic, unfussy, and full of character. It’s the kind of place where crisp white tablecloths meet a casual atmosphere, where you can show up solo for a relaxed lunch or bring someone special for a charming dinner.

Let’s talk about the menu, because this is where Pique-Nique really shines. It's an ode to traditional French cooking - and not the overcomplicated kind. We're talking real, rich, and memorable flavors.

Their Pâté en Croûte is a serious highlight. It’s buttery, flaky, and filled with perfectly seasoned meat - the kind of thing you can only get right when you really know what you're doing. Then there’s the Sea Bass Wellington, which brings a luxurious twist to the British classic. Wrapped in pastry, served with elegance - it's become a quiet favorite among locals.

Craving something heartier? The Duck Mallard and Sirloin Steak are go-tos for meat lovers. The Chateaubriand with spinach dauphinoise hits that indulgent sweet spot - rich, savory, and surprisingly balanced. And don’t even think about skipping dessert. The Mille-Feuille Mont Blanc is as delicate as it is decadent, and the Tarte Tatin will have you considering a second round.

Pique-Nique doesn’t do takeaway, and that’s intentional. Dining here is an experience - not just a meal. There’s no delivery, no grab-and-go, just the joy of sitting down and savoring properly crafted food in good company. With outdoor seating available and a wheelchair-accessible layout (entrance, seating, and restrooms), it’s designed to be welcoming for all.

Their drink menu is just as curated. Expect a strong wine list - mostly French, of course - alongside craft cocktails, a proper espresso, and a small but thoughtful selection of spirits and beer. Whether it’s Champagne with asparagus or a glass of red with veal, pairings here feel intentional, not accidental.

Pique-Nique is particularly popular for lunch and dinner, especially with those who appreciate a slower pace and refined flavors. It’s also a hit with solo diners, thanks to its relaxed, friendly staff and non-intimidating layout. If you’re flying solo, grab a small table, order the carbonara or onion soup, and unwind with a glass of Burgundy.

What makes Pique-Nique stand out? For one, it doesn’t try too hard. There’s no trendy fusion, no gimmicky presentations - just confident, classic French dishes done incredibly well. Compared to larger brasseries or chain French eateries in London, Pique-Nique feels intimate, curated, and unapologetically authentic.

You’re not going to find QR-code menus here. It’s about real service, real ingredients, and a setting that feels like a well-kept secret. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, there’s always something comforting about being greeted by the smell of roasted chicken and the quiet clink of glasses over linen.

It also hits that sweet spot of being refined yet accessible. You can enjoy a relaxed croissant and coffee, or dive into a lavish multi-course dinner. The atmosphere lets you choose your own pace - something that’s surprisingly rare in central London.

For those serious about French cuisine or simply looking for a charming corner to enjoy crispy potatoes with a glass of wine, Pique-Nique is well worth the visit. It's not loud, it's not flashy - and that’s exactly the point.

Had such a lovely time at this hidden gem. The restaurant has a wide ranging wine list with the availability to have various sizes : carafe and bottles. The food was also delicious. We had a salad with soup, scallops and artichoke and then venison for a main course. The sharing concept at the restaurant is done really well with good recommended dishes from the staff as well as portion control! As you can see from the images the food was delicious and cooked well. Lovely clean bathrooms as well which is always appreciated. Would really recommend this restaurant if you're in the area

My beloved restaurant in London! The moment you walk in, you feel like you’ve stepped into France. The food is excellent, the wines are absolutely amazing, and the service is always warm and super friendly. They make the most unusual sauce for mussels — I just can’t get enough of it! While they recommend pairing it with white wine, I personally think red works even better, as the sauce is warm, rich, and slightly sweet.

What can I say about this place. Have been visiting for years now, not very often to be honest but every time the experience is unique. The menu is a bit pricey but bare in mind that the mains are for sharing, so there is no way you leave the place hungry. The flavours of both food and wine are amazing and desserts are fantastic too. Cozy little place that always makes us feel welcome.

This place was above and beyond our expectations. The mains are meant for sharing, but you can choose individual starters and desserts. There is a nice vibe with dimmed lights and table candles. The waitress was very professional and polite and the manager is very knowledgeable with wines and very friendly. They treated us so well and made us feel so welcome. There is a beautiful wine list but also interesting choices by the glass. Absolutely wonderful experience.

Both Pique-Nique and sister restaurant Casse Croute are amazing. I dined alone at the bar and was well taken care of. The food is divine!
